Welcome back to Positively Inspiring!
I’ve been blessed to meet so many amazing, inspiring people and in this series I’m sharing the lessons that they’ve learned about happiness and positivity – let’s bring on the inspiration!
Today I’m so delighted to welcome US Attorney Joleena Louis.
Joleena Louis, Esq. is an NYC-based attorney who helps entrepreneurs protect their business from divorce. She is passionate about helping entrepreneurs and teaching other lawyers how to start their own law practice. You can find her at joleenalouislaw.com, modernsolo.com – a one-stop resource to bring great advice and information for small practices and solo attorneys all together in one place – on Twitter @joleenalouislaw and on Instagram @joleenalouislaw_nyc.
Joleena, you are such a positive person! But who do YOU find most inspiring for their positive attitude and outlook on their life / business?
I would have to say, my dad. He is the most positive person I know. No matter what the situation I can always go to him for a positive outlook.
What would you say is the most important lesson you’ve learned about happiness or staying positive?
The most important lesson I’ve learned about happiness and staying positive is that it’s INTENTIONAL. You have to make the decision to be happy. You have to look at a negative situation, figure out what you can learn from it, and decide to turn it into something positive.
A recent struggle for me was my divorce in 2015. When I left my ex early that year, my law practice was a little over a year old and my income was barely sufficient to cover both my business expenses and living expenses. The emotional and financial burden of the divorce made me feel like giving up on my business completely.
One day I decided that I wasn’t going to let the situation control my life. I made the decision to be happy. Every time I had thoughts about what my life was lacking, I made it a point to immediately list all of my blessings.
I worked harder than I ever had before, spent more time with friends and starting doing more activities that I loved. I cut my hair, wore what I wanted, ate what I wanted and started to feel the freedom that I did not feel in my marriage. I made 2015 the year of me and it was empowering.
When I started focusing on me and my happiness, all the negativity I was feeling before seemed trivial.
We all have days that don’t go according to plan! What are your top tips for staying positive when you have one of those days?
When I’m having a frustrating day, the first thing I do is take a deep breath. Then I ask myself, does this problem really matter? If it matters, is there anything I can do about it? If I can, I’ll stop complaining and do it. If there is nothing I can do then there is no point in stressing about it.
Then I go home, have a glass of wine and read a good book in a bubble bath. I’m always happy and relaxed after that.
What’s your favourite quote about happiness or staying positive?
My favorite positive quote is “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything, they make the best of everything.”
Finally Joleena, what does happiness mean for you?
In life, there will always be hardship. No matter what situation you are facing, there is a way to make the best of it. There is always a silver lining if you are willing to look hard enough and willing to make the decision to be happy.
Happiness for me is having the willingness to see the good in everything.
